The Power of YOU: Research This Before Changing Careers

Power Quote of the Month

“Information is Power”
~ Francis Bacon

When I began my work as a career coach more than 30 years ago, researching a new career was slow, manual, and often expensive. It meant trips to the library, digging through industry publications, and—if you were lucky—paying for access to business databases that most individuals simply couldn’t afford.

Today, the problem isn’t lack of information.

It’s too much information—and not knowing how to use it well.

That’s especially true for mid-career professionals who are:

  • Considering a career pivot
  • Feeling stuck or plateaued
  • Returning to the job market after time away
  • Or wanting to become more competitive in their current field

How Career Research Works Today

After I complete a comprehensive career assessment with a client, we typically identify three viable career paths for focused exploration. From there, clients now have access to an extraordinary amount of high-quality information that helps them make smart, confident decisions—if they know how to leverage it.

Using today’s tools including AI, clients can efficiently research:

  • Real job descriptions to understand what roles actually involve day-to-day
  • Education, credentials, and skill requirements employers expect
  • Where to find reputable programs to gain those skills and credentials
  • Sample resumes to see how others successfully position themselves
  • A clear, compelling two-minute pitch to explain a pivot or advancement
  • Company information for formulating intelligent business questions during interviews
  • Salary ranges and market realities
  • Strong, thoughtful answers to common candidate interview questions

It’s a goldmine—but only when approached strategically.

Why Strategy Matters More Than Ever

I don’t believe in information for information’s sake. My work focuses on teaching clients how to think, not just what to search.

I show clients how to:

  • Ask better questions
  • Filter what’s relevant vs. what’s noise
  • Translate past experience into future value
  • Use AI as a strategic partner—not a shortcut

The result? Clients gain a real competitive advantage—clarity, confidence, and a clear direction forward.

The Ultimate Goal

My goal isn’t to make clients dependent on me for answers.

It’s to help them become savvy managers of their own career development—whether that means advancing on their current path, pivoting into something new, or positioning themselves as the strongest possible candidate in a competitive market.

Careers will continue to evolve. Technology will continue to change how we work. But the professionals who know how to research intelligently, adapt strategically, and position themselves clearly will always be in demand.

That’s the skill set I help my clients build.
