The Power of Y.O.U. and Evaluating the Impact of AI on Your Career and Industry
Power Quote of the Month
“AI won’t replace you but a person using AI effectively as a tool will”
The rapid rise of AI tools like ChatGPT is reshaping the workplace—and it’s time to take stock. Whether you’re a creative, a consultant, or a coder, AI is influencing how work gets done. But is it a threat or a tool? The answer depends on how you evaluate its relevance to your career and industry. Unfortunately, I find many clients are fearing their jobs will be replaced by AI in the near term. Rather than buying into this limiting belief, focus on all the new possibilities it can create and how leveraging AI tools can advance your career and help you provide greater value.
By answering these 4 questions below you’ll gain a leg up on how to strengthen your performance.
First, begin assessing how AI is being adopted in your field. Are companies automating tasks you do daily? Are competitors using ChatGPT to gain efficiency, generate content, or support customer interactions? Read industry news, follow thought leaders, and talk to peers to track adoption trends.
Second, reflect on your own roles and responsibilities and workflow.
Identify repetitive tasks that could be augmented or automated. Could ChatGPT help you work smarter—drafting reports, brainstorming ideas, analyzing data? Understanding what can be automated versus what requires your unique insight is key.
Third, Research what new skills or mindsets are emerging as valuable in the AI era? Roles that require judgment, emotional intelligence, complex problem-solving, or cross-functional thinking are becoming more vital. Lean into what makes you human.
Finally, think strategically. Could you position yourself as an AI-savvy leader or early adopter? Could you guide others in responsible AI use? Rather than resisting change, consider how you might shape it.
The most important takeaway is this: the goal isn’t to fear AI—it’s to future-proof your career by staying curious, adaptable, and proactive. AI won’t replace you. But someone using AI effectively might.
